Intro to Databases

At some point, you've probably cleaned out a drawer or your garage. Maybe you finally committed to untangling your box of spare cables. Whatever you were straightening, you were likely reunited with items you haven't seen in years, and you also realized just how much stuff you have. But, whether to get rid of those items is a tough decision. Not out of emotional attachment, but utility.

When would you ever need that 6-foot length of coax cable or that odd hose connector? As soon as you get rid of it, of course. (It never fails.) So, back into the garage, drawer, or box it goes. (Hopefully you tossed a few things at least.)

That's how companies feel about their data these days. Before the cloud, storage was expensive. If you ran out of disk space, you'd have to buy more hard drives or a new network storage system. There used to be real expense associated with storing data. That's just not the case any more. AWS will store your data for as little as half a penny per gigabyte per month. That's about $5 per month to store a terabyte, and it's really easy to set it up.

Why do companies keep all that data? Well, you never know when you're going to need it. And rest assured you'll need it once it's gone.

Unlike your garage or junk drawer though, there are people at the helm of all that data. These are database administrators, data scientists, and analysts. They know exactly what data is being collected and stored — and how to retrieve it. Importantly, they also know how to extract meaning from it. Since data is the lifeblood of any business, database administration play an integral role in a company's success.

In this Intro to IT training, CBT Nuggets trainer Garth Schulte talks about all the different database jobs out there, what experience you need to get them, and even shows you how to design and build your first database.
